Internet Scam Alert: “Ramsomware”

The Reveton virus that works in conjunction with Citadel malware demands a ransom to unlock your computer.

This virus has surfaced on two MISD computers.

Unlike other viruses that require you to open an attachment, this one activates when you click on any link on a web site that has been compromised.

This is a description of the virus:

This is what you should do if you get it:

  • Do not pay any money or provide any personal information.
  • Contact the MISD Help Desk at 4357 to remove Reveton and Citadel from your computer.
  • Be aware that even if you are able to unfreeze your computer on your own, the malware may still operate in the background. Certain types of malware have been known to capture personal information such as user names, passwords, and credit card numbers through embedded keystroke logging programs.
